KALఅA by Kankatala is the newest chapter of a story that began in 1943, when a young Kankatala Appalaraju opened a small shop in the old town of Visakhapatnam, selling handpicked cotton and silk sarees. What started as a 6×8 ft storefront grew, over decades, into one of South India’s most trusted names in handwoven sarees — built one relationship, one weaver, one carefully chosen drape at a time.
Every sari we present has been personally selected by a member of the family, with equal weight given to weave, design, fabric and finish. It is a slower, more deliberate way of building a collection — but it is the only way we know how to do it.
Behind every sari is a weaver whose hands have spent days, sometimes weeks, bringing it to life. For generations, our family has worked closely with these craftspeople across India’s weaving hubs — relationships that go well beyond a transaction. The small irregularities you sometimes find in a handloom weave aren’t flaws; they are the fingerprint of a human hand, and part of what makes each piece one of a kind.
KALఅA by Kankatala is now open at Governor’s Bungalow Road, Siripuram, Visakhapatnam — a new address anchored in the same 1943 promise, built for a new generation of sari lovers.
